My Weekend…

Hey all!!

Happy Weekend. I decided to not stay at home and watch movie all weekend so I decided to hang out in Chinatown. I did a little shopping, ate a bit, and went to a MUSEUM (I love free museums!!). It was pretty great except for the fact that it was a blazing 100 degrees outside. However, I think I managed.

Chinese food yum!! Spent more money then I should have here -_-

The American Art Museum!

This museum was pretty awesome. I actually want to come in again. They had so many different styles of art like African American, portraits of famous people, Video Game art, and abstracts. It’s great! Especially when it’s blazing hot outside.

The Portrait Gallery Hall.

Anyways…I had a great Saturday here.

Zipcar! WIN!

As everyone probably knows now my baby boy Lightning McQueen is no longer with me. As much as I love my car, it would be a hassle for me to bring him up here. The cost of parking here is just too crazy and it’s just not really necessary when public transportation is pretty great here (albeit annoying at times). However, sometimes it’s necessary to have a car (especially when you need to make large purchases, grocery shopping, or go somewhere kind of far). For this reason I applied for a zip car! It’s such a cool company and system. You just sign up, get a zipcard, and you can find cars that are near you (on an iPhone app of course). Then you walk to your car, press the card against the window and the doors unlock! Purely fascinating! So the other day I tried to see what all the hype was about.

My first ZIPCAR!! and it’s green..how cool!

So where did I go in my first zip car….I went shopping of course!

I overestimated how much time I needed but it was still great. It also reminded me how much I miss driving. By the way driving is one of my favorite pastimes. It’s very relaxing. I was able to get lost (sort-of) and take a little driving tour of the city.

Only con was that once I returned the car I still had to get on the Metro and then walk home. The Zipcar company would be pretty amazing if they could just pick up the car from wherever your last stop was. Hmmmm…maybe one day.

Health Care for ALL!

Seeing as my main reason for moving to DC and pursuing a MPH in Health Policy, this is pretty cool to me. So today is a huge day in our nation’s history (well health history at least). Today the Supreme Court decided to uphold the Affordable Care Act which will allow pretty much everyone (except a select few) to purchase health care. This is a huge deal for health care and I think it’s a great start to where we are trying to go in the future. I know there are still issues and kinks that need to be worked out, but that is nothing new. Moreover, it was amazing that I work about 7 minutes away from the Capitol and the Supreme Court! For this reason I was able to take a field trip right there!! I was able to get up and close to the action. Although there were tons of protestors when I arrived, it’s pretty amazing how accessible you are to the policy that affects the country. This makes me happy that I ended up here. So here’s some documentation of my journey!!

Here’s a link you can read to show you how this ruling affects you…

Great experience. Loved every minute of it. It will be interesting to see what happens from this moment on.

Supporters and Protestors Mill Around

Beautiful building!

Some of the protestors…this one intrigued me

this one was pretty creative as well.

Guess who I saw standing in the crowd y’all?! It’s JESUS!

Happy Hour!

That is all….

My 2nd Attempt at becoming a chef…

For this one I’ll give myself a strong B-. I didn’t fail, but I feel like I definitely could have done a better job. So I went on food network.com again to find an easy recipe to make that would also last me for about a good few days. However, my house doesn’t have enough tools for me to create a recipe with ease. The main thing that I’m really missing is a pot large enough to boil noodles. How do you just not have large size pots! All my house has is skillets and one smaller pot. Since I’m not buying kitchen utensils until I move into my other apartment, I had to make due with what I had. However, my noodles were WAY too big to cook in a smaller pot. Either way, my goal was to make penne with spinach sauce. This is what the recipe was supposed to produce….

Here is how it turned out…..

Ok….so maybe I deserve a C-. But at least I tried right?? ehhhh…..maybe next time.

One & Done

Long Island Ice Tea

….so what’s in a name anyways?

  • 4 ounces tequila
  • 4 ounces vodka
  • 4 ounces blended whiskey (recommended: Seagram’s 7)
  • 8 ounces Triple Sec
  • 8 ounces cola
  • 2 lemons, juiced

So now I get it…..you drink one and you’re officially done… whoever said that was a good idea was wrong!

This summer is all about discovery. Everyday I discover more and more about myself. I think this quote really embodies that discovery right now.

Probably the best thing I’ve learned ALL day…

and it’s not even Noon yet!

Use a Tree!

It seems as though if you’re not careful this could be very problematic. However, it’s worth it under dire circumstances. Someone try it and let me know if it works. If it doesn’t I’m sorry you wasted your money on a bottle of wine.

Cajun Shrimp and Rice YUMMM!

Cajun Shrimp and Rice YUMMM!

So since I’ve been in DC I’ve been accustomed to the typical dinner of Chef-Boyardee, Frozen foods, Corn Dogs and the occasional Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich. My body was constantly craving something more natural and home made. Understanding that I can’t call my mom up to make me something I had to find a solution on my own. What am I supposed to do? Just so you know, I have the cooking skill of a 5 year old (a potentially unattractive quality about myself). So I decided that I had to give in, I just had to suck it up and cook something. Any amateur chef knows that the best place to go for recipes is food network (you know you have dreams of eating food network food don’t lie). I found a recipe and took to the grocery store. To me the grocery store is like a fortress of confusion where my brain just goes haywire. Something about that land of food and drink just boggles my mind (where can I find the fruit section again?). However, I managed it. Confession: my recipe called for 3 cloves of garlic and I bought 3 heads (All heads weren’t used in the making of this dish). Confession#2: I had no idea what scallions were. I thought it was a fish and BOY was I wrong. If somebody would have told me they were green onions I definitely would have found them much easier.

Either way it came out pretty well! Maybe I can start a new hobby? (well after I get my own kitchen that I don’t have to share). How does it look?

More Bus Fail -_-

So after buying groceries at the store I thought it would be better to get on the bus instead of walk home with grocery bags. I get to the bus stop, check my phone and the bus won’t arrive for another 30 minutes. DAMN! OK so I guess I have to walk home with my bag of milk, butter and produce anyways. Sweated like a cow. Feel great. Thanks MetroBus
